The Future of Live Sports Streaming: Trends to Watch
With streaming-exclusive deals in the works for major sports leagues and new services from the likes of Apple, Amazon Prime, and Disney, it’s clear that the appetite for live sports is growing amongst audiences. But what does this mean for broadcast stalwarts, and what’s next as streamers look to grab a share of the pie?
A new study from Anglia Ruskin University reveals that attending live sporting events increases levels of life satisfaction and decreases feelings of loneliness. The researchers used data from a survey of 7,209 16- to 85-year-olds in England who participated in the Taking Part initiative. The study found that watching sporting events of all types—from village sport teams to Premier League soccer matches—can boost well-being. It’s important to note that previous research has analyzed specific sports or smaller sample sizes, so this is the first large-scale investigation of the mental health effects of attending live sporting events. The findings could be used to develop public health initiatives that encourage more people to attend sporting events and other cultural activities.
