The goal of these AI innovations is to create a deeply personalized gaming experience. For example, an AI-powered NPC in a virtual world might be programmed to respond to the player’s actions with startlingly human-like behavior — like asking about their day or gossiping about the other players — which helps immerse the gamer and makes them feel as though they are playing a unique game designed just for them.

How AI Is Making Video Games Smarter and More Realistic

This same technology can also improve the efficiency of making minor game assets. For example, AI-powered algorithms can pore over 3D models, textures, audio files, environment geometry and other data to condense file sizes without negatively impacting visual or sound quality. This allows for much faster loading times and smoother gameplay.

One of the most impressive developments in this area is Microsoft’s generative gaming model called Muse, which used 500,000 hours worth of gameplay to create one game level. While the game was a simple shooter, its designers found that the ability of the system to produce new environments helped them focus more time and energy on the game’s story and mechanics. Obviously, most game designers won’t have access to 500,000 hours of gameplay. But they may be able to use small prototypes of Muse-style games to test their ideas before investing large amounts of time and resources into full-scale development.
